Frequently Asked Questions

  • I handbuild one-of-a-kind and limited-edition pieces; vessels, wall works, functional ware, sconces, lamps, and occasional dolls. I primarily use red stoneware clay with colored slips and textured details. Everything is made slowly in my Ohio studio.

  • It depends on size and complexity—a small vessel might take a week or two from start to final firing, while larger or more detailed works can take several weeks. Firing and glazing add time, so patience is part of the process.

  • Yes, I welcome custom commissions for singular pieces. Tell me your vision (size, colors, inspiration), and we can discuss feasibility, timeline, and pricing.

  • You can reach us anytime via our contact page or email. We aim to respond quickly—usually within one business day.

  • Pieces range from small (6–12 inches, $200–$600) to larger statement works (18–36+ inches, $800–$2,500+). Prices reflect materials, time, firing costs, and uniqueness. Please note that shipping is an additional fee.

  • New pieces are available in the shop here on susanmentrak.com. I occasionally offer work through galleries or exhibitions. Please register for my newsletter for early notification of release times.

  • Because each piece is handbuilt and unique, returns are limited. If something arrives damaged, contact me immediately with photos for a resolution (replacement or refund). Custom commissions are final sale.

  • Most are food-safe and will be labeled as such in the items description, but hand-wash only (no dishwasher/microwave for delicate surfaces). Avoid extreme temperature changes. Dust with a soft cloth; enjoy them as art or functional objects.

Rarely Asked Questions

  • No, but I was fired from being a volunteer bingo caller at a Nursing Home. I would forget to separate the called numbers and would put them back in the cage only to call them again. Frustrated, I made up numbers hoping they wouldn’t notice. They did. Oh, and I would forget to close the cage so when I turned it the balls would go all over the floor. I called the numbers off the floor as I picked them up. They told me I couldn’t come back.

  • Isthmus. The s right next to the th is a nightmare. I could say Tombolo instead, however, that would leave out the non sand instances in which case I would have to defer to saying “land bridge”. I do find Tombolo to be quite a fun word to say. You should try it.

  • I thought the holidays (Christmas, Easter, Halloween…) were random. It wasn’t until High School that I understood that Christmas was always on December 25. I just thought someone in the government made up when we had holidays.

  • That is not a question.
